SUNDAY DINNER AT GRANDMA'S
Sunday dinner at grandma's house
Was always such a treat.
She'd welcome you with country charm,
And, wonderful things to eat.Chicken and dumplings and candied yams,
Fresh veggies and pies, and cakes,
We'd eat and stuff, and stuff and eat,
Until our tummy's would ache. The hum-drum talk at the table,
Was enjoyable through and through.
No children's table at grandma's house,
She said, "Kids are people, too!"Later the men would drift to the porch,
The ladies, the dishes to do.
Menfolk would talk of things on the farm,
While the ladies shared the news.We children would ask to be excused,
Then off to the barn, took flight,
The hay was as soft as a Mother's lap,
Where we jumped and yelled with delight.Thanksgiving spent at grandma's house,
Was something hard to describe.
Grandma and grandpa were just like two kids,
With all the work set aside. She'd bake a turkey and pumpkin pies,
Her white apron like Joseph's coat.
Had ever color of the rainbow on it,
Orange pumpkin, flour and egg yolk. There were smells and joy on Christmas Day,
And a few tears, as we'd depart.
They could not wash away, memories made,
As we burned them deep in our hearts.Jay Cee ~~ ©
