THE LAST MAN
So, today we learn from many sources,
That the war is over, and our armed Forces,
Can come home to families who lived in fear,
From a war we've been in, all these years.
A war; not a war - Never declared.
Still, families and friends feel they have shared,
The same anxiety of long wars, past.
The same happy feelings, knowing it's over, at last.
I heard on the air, of someone who said,
"What of the family, of the last man, dead?"
"What must they feel?" - And, I understand.
But, if he had to die, why not the last man?
His life was worth more than any could know.
But, I still feel he would be willing to go,
And to do his best to make his stand;
Being proud to know, he was the last man.
War may accomplish some unknown fate.
But still does not rid us of violence and hate.
Of coldness, hunger, diseases in store.
We have ends to wars - but not end to W A R.NOTE:
This poem was written the day the Vietnam War peace treaty was signed. The year was 1973. A local radio station personality was asking that people call in their thoughts on this special day.
I wondered about the last man to die before the war was declared over. And, if he would be proud to know he was the last man to die in the horror of Vietnam.
The Dee Jay's name was Dale Mitchell and he read this poem on the radio. I was honored.
