TWO ROADS
Here I stand by the side of the road;
A road that forks up ahead.
"Which shall I take?" I asked myself,
"What was it my Father had said
Nothing to do but try each one,
And so I began with the left.
I traveled only a little ways;
To see it all for myself.
This could not be the right one;
As soon, I could surely see;
For all the holes and pitfalls,
Made me stumble to my knees.
The flowers were but simple weeds,
Withered and drying; near dead.
I turned and crawled back to the start;
To take the other road, instead.
Starting down it, I could instantly tell,
By the beauty in ever glade;
"Oh, Yes", I cried, "This is the one,
The one our Lord had made.
I journeyed onward fast and high,
Enjoying each gift that came.
There were food and drink to feast upon;
Such fun! As if life were a game.
And yet, I wasn't at all happy.
I felt used, ragged and old.
Each day and night of living this life,
All the fun was taking its toll.
I turned and ran through the flowers.
I dropped the food and wine.
I tossed away the money bag,
I had coveted as mine.
Back at the very beginning,
I rushed out in the road;
The road with brambles and pitfalls.
Praise God, I had broken the code.
For now I was on the right road;
The one where you work at each step,
For there were no easy miles.
But there was Someone to help.
I called at once upon His name,
And much easier became the road.
Things began to look different,
As He carried my heavy load.
Satan can truly fool us,
With beauties and worldly wants.
He teases and he promises.
And tempts us as he taunts.
He can make the world look marvelous,
To those who'll hear his tale,
With all his lies and promises,
That leads one straight to hell.
I hope you choose the right road.
If you'll listen to what I have told.
Soon you'll see the road you're on,
Has suddenly turned to gold.
And all the brambles disappeared;
The pitfalls, smoothed away.
On to Heaven you're headed,
As all roads now lead that way.
