THE SCARECROW

He stands alert, ever so tall,
While guarding pumpkins in the Fall.
As autumn leaves trickle down,
Joining apples on the ground.

Silent sentinel; handsome still,
The scarecrow awaits Jack Frost's kill;
When once again to seal his fate,
He's off to the barn, in storage, to wait.

And as the winter plans her return
Not one thought or one concern;
For the lovely, haunting Autumn tune,
Erasing even the harvest moon.

Yet memories live within our heart-
And will not let the autumn part,
But packed away until a day,
The dewdrops decorate a spider's display.

And soon, as the trees begin to turn,
The smell of bonfires brightly burn,
Up he'll pop, on a brisk autumn day.
When the leaves and wind join in to play.
