THE HEART AND SOUL OF MAN

Crowded subways and concrete gardens,
I'll pass up, if you'll pardon.
Swap city life, I'll never miss
Wave a fond farewell, blow a goodbye kiss.
Go far away, where the river flows,
Crystal clear, with fish in the coves.
Crisp green grass I could lie in all day-
Catch butterflies and let them go, just for play.
Watch birds build their nests, as they sing a song.
Lie in clover, counting clouds the day long.
Go barefoot by the river, wiggling toes in the sand,
Catch a tadpole in a puddle, feel it move in my hand.
Hair blowing free, brisk wind in my face.
Warm summer rain on my lips I taste.
Huge drops fall, I run for a tree.
Heart thumping wildly, as from the elements I flee.
Sun breaks out and the clouds blow away.
Rain kissed meadows, make me want to stay-
And watch the sunrays gather each tiny drop
From grass and leaf like a shepherd's flock.
Smell the earth, so fresh, caressed by the rain.
I should move on, but still I remain
To watch the sun set, far in the west
Watching twilight creep, with darkness it's quest.
Sit by and by with the warmth of a fire
Thinking of life, I make a wish on a star.
Hot bitter coffee from a rough tin cup,
Relaxes the senses, my thinking erupts.
As drowsiness attacks me, I give in to the whim.
Fall asleep as a nightbird sings from a limb.
A haunting sound, yet soothing and free
As I slip into darkness and then cease to be.
My eyes open slowly to a bright new dawn.
Very suddenly it seems, the darkness is gone.
I sit up slowly, reverently hold out my hand,
Knowing I have found the heart and soul of man.
