THE OLD CEMETERY

Standing off the road, back in the trees
Are broken headstones, no one sees.
Forgotten loved ones, left here all alone,
Some with no markers to show they are gone.
If you step inside through the rusty iron gate
As you count the graves, of those who wait,
You may see a marker, a rock, a small wooden cross
Some almost shiny, while some are growing moss.
Neglected through the years, vines and grasses abound
Purple Creeping Myrtle, makes a carpet on the ground.
Yellow daffodils nodding, planted neatly in a row,
Pushing up flower heads, through a late spring snow.
Trees and hedges grow lush, after warm summer rains
Hiding the sorrows, the troubles, the pains.
Shadows lay so softly, as they cover this earth,
That's home to a few, who came just after birth.
Autumn leaves give a sacrifice of color in the fall,
Decorating every mound, in case someone should call.
Then Jack Frost blows his frigid breath, covering all with ice.
And the season is upon us. Christmas flowers would be nice.
The snows of winter drifting down, silently, upon this place
Changing everything to purity, giving all a brand new face.
But hope doth spring eternal, as the old year ends.
A new year coming closer, could bring kin or maybe friends.
It was the end of May, a car pulls up, a second and a third.
Doors slam, bringing cheerful folks, with shovel, rakes, My Word!
They set about clearing, scrubbing, AND THERE ARE FLOWERS!
So now the unseen cemetery, so clean, we call it ours.
Maybe you don't know the ones, who lay beyond the fence.
You never see a living soul, come to sit upon the bench
But a cemetery is a sacred place, for our loved ones to rest.
They should be respected, and kept clean; No less!
For one day we'll be lain to rest, in a cemetery near by
Our kin will come and watch, and some will no doubt cry.
For there is hope we will live again, if we believe in God's powers.
As we wait, we humbly pray for a clean spot and a few flowers.
